Travellers flying from Spain to Italy will continue to face document inspection on arrival after the Italian Interior Ministry prolonged its temporary re-introduction of internal-border controls until 30 September. Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi Airport published a customer notice on 25 September confirming that flights from Spain will be channelled through the non-Schengen arrivals area for the duration of the measure. The advisory stresses that Italian, Spanish and other EU/EEA citizens are not subject to extra paperwork, but third-country nationals will undergo a full eligibility check. The bilateral spat began on 1 August when Rome cited “public-security risks” linked to the Ceuta crisis and suspended normal Schengen facilitation for passengers arriving from Spanish airports and seaports. Madrid responded in kind for travellers coming from Italy. For business-travel planners, the extension means that mixed-nationality project teams flying from Madrid or Barcelona to Italian hubs must allow additional time for manual border inspection. Companies sponsoring third-country employees to attend trade fairs in Milan or customer meetings in Bologna should review visa validity and carry assignment letters to pre-empt queries about the purpose of stay. Airlines have warned that routing Spain-origin flights through non-Schengen concourses reduces gate availability and could cause minor schedule adjustments at peak times. Forwarders moving hand-carried time-critical goods—such as aircraft spare parts—should build extra buffer into lead times.
