The National Police’s Illegal Immigration and Document Fraud Unit (UCRIF) carried out two simultaneous raids in Ceuta late on 24 September, uncovering 28 migrants hidden in sub-standard apartments used by a trafficking network that specialises in moving people from North Africa to mainland Europe. Three suspects—two Spanish nationals and one Moroccan—were arrested on charges of facilitating illegal entry and forging visas. Investigators acted on intelligence supplied by EUROPOL after a months-long inquiry spanning 17 countries. The ring would first secure legitimate tourist visas for clients, then supply counterfeit EU passports so they could board flights from Ceuta’s heliport or ferries to Algeciras and onward to the United Kingdom via other Schengen airports. Each migrant allegedly paid between €8,000 and €12,000. All 28 rescued individuals, including five women and two minors, have been transferred to Ceuta’s temporary holding centre, where they will undergo health screening and asylum eligibility interviews. The Interior Ministry said the operation “strikes a major blow” against an organisation responsible for at least 400 illicit transits this year. For corporate mobility managers, the case is a reminder that document-fraud scrutiny at Spanish airports and seaports remains high. Business travellers should ensure that employees carry originals of passports, residence cards and assignment letters, as border officers are increasingly trained to spot sophisticated forgeries.
