Foreign visitor surge boosts Upper Austria tourism, signalling rebound in corporate and leisure travel

Statistik Austria figures released on 26 September show that Upper Austria welcomed 1.6 million arrivals and 4.3 million overnight stays between May and August—both up 3.4 percent year-on-year. The driver was international demand: foreign guest arrivals jumped 6.1 percent to 855,000, while their overnight stays climbed 7.8 percent to 2.1 million. The strongest growth came from neighbouring Czechia (+26 percent in nights) and Poland (+24 percent), but long-haul markets such as the United Kingdom (+13.6 percent) also returned in force. Germany, still the province’s biggest source market, posted a solid 3.4 percent rise. Provincial tourism minister Markus Achleitner credited joint overseas marketing campaigns and improved rail links—such as ÖBB’s new Nightjet to Paris—for the gains. For multinational firms with operations around Linz or the Salzkammergut lake district, the numbers indicate that hotel capacity is tightening during peak months. Corporate travel buyers may face higher room rates and longer booking lead times for project teams and expatriate relocations. Meeting-industry players, however, see an opportunity: Linz Convention Bureau reports a 12 percent increase in enquiries for Q1 2027 conferences. Hoteliers are responding by accelerating renovation projects deferred during the pandemic, while the regional government is expanding its ‘Welcome2Upper Austria’ concierge service that helps foreign professionals navigate residence permits and schooling for accompanying family members. The upward trend continued into August, with 468,000 arrivals (+2.6 percent) and 1.32 million room nights (+3.4 percent). Analysts at Bank Austria now expect the province to surpass its record 2019 visitor volume by year-end, underscoring Austria’s broader recovery in both leisure and business mobility.
