Vienna Airport connectivity reshuffled as inner-city S-Bahn line closes for 13 months

Travellers heading to or from Vienna Airport face a year-long change in ground-transport patterns after the core section of the S-Bahn ‘Stammstrecke’ between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof shut down for major modernisation on 7 September 2026. Tourist board WienTourismus updated its passenger advisory on 24 September, detailing replacement options that keep airport-city links operational. The City Airport Train (CAT) has switched to a ‘CAT by Bus’ service, running luxury coaches every 12–15 minutes between the airport and Wien Mitte. ÖBB Railjet and InterCity services continue non-stop to Hauptbahnhof twice hourly, while the suburban S7 now terminates at St. Marx with tram and bus connections onward. Two new Vienna Airport Bus routes—to Praterstern and Karlsplatz—were launched on 5 September, improving access to conference venues and UN-City. For business travellers the disruption mainly affects those relying on the CAT’s downtown check-in facility, which is suspended until at least October 2027. Companies should factor an extra 10–15 minutes into airport transfers and brief visiting executives on the new interchange points. Event organisers bringing delegates to Vienna’s autumn congress season are advised to charter coaches or issue pre-loaded transit cards to avoid confusion at St. Marx. The closure is part of a €1.4 billion upgrade that will boost capacity on Vienna’s busiest rail artery to 22 trains per hour in each direction once completed. In the interim, mobility managers should monitor timetables closely; ÖBB plans occasional weekend track possessions that could divert Railjets via alternative routes. Airlines, for their part, welcome the detailed contingency plan, noting that any passenger bottlenecks in the airport forecourt can cascade into check-in delays. Vienna Airport says it is working with the bus operator Blaguss to ensure stand allocation does not clash with tour-group coaches during peak hours.
