The operator of the A22 Autostrada del Brennero has announced a series of night-time lane and toll-gate closures that started on the evening of 25 September 2026 and will run in phases until mid-October. The first restriction shut the Brennerbad southbound entrance from 18:29 on 25 September to 20:00 on 16 October, while additional diversions affect kilometres 1–12 near the Austrian border overnight between 18:00 and 05:00. Although the works take place on the Italian side, the Brenner corridor is the primary road freight artery between Austria and Italy and a critical link for supply chains extending to Germany and Switzerland. Logistics associations warn that even short overnight closures can cascade into daytime congestion as heavy-goods vehicles queue for re-opening, potentially adding hours to just-in-time delivery schedules. Passenger vehicles, including corporate travellers driving rented cars from Innsbruck or Bolzano airports, should expect detours via the state road SS12 or plan departures outside the affected windows. Companies with production facilities in Tyrol or South Tyrol are advised to shift loads onto rail where possible. ÖBB’s adjacent Brenner freight rail line remains unaffected and still offers up to 240 trains per day, though capacity is tight. Forwarders should also monitor the emergency lane status; A22 reports that SOS telephones are currently out of order between Brenner and Sterzing, which could delay incident response. The maintenance works are part of a €100 million resurfacing and safety-upgrade package designed to prepare the motorway for the opening of the Brenner Base Tunnel rail line in 2032, when truck volumes are expected to fall. In the interim, mobility planners need to incorporate the rolling closures into travel policies, advise drivers on alternative parking and fuelling points, and pre-alert travellers about possible schedule slippage.
