The Interior Ministry has suspended onward transfers for the morning pending ferry availability, raising fears of renewed overcrowding and tensions both inside the facility and in the local community. Lampedusa’s reception pressure complicates Rome’s broader migration agenda at a time when Italy has temporarily reinstated air-and-sea border checks on traffic from Spain under the Schengen safeguard clause. A senior official told local media that the government is accelerating charter-flight repatriations for nationals from countries with readmission agreements, but many of the latest arrivals may qualify for asylum or humanitarian status, prolonging their stay in the system. Businesses sending staff to Sicily or Malta should monitor ferry schedules and allow extra time for security controls at ports and airports, where police resources are being redirected to escort transferees. Corporate relocation teams should also be aware that residence-permit processing in Agrigento province is facing backlogs as immigration staff are seconded to hotspot duty. With sea conditions remaining calm, the Coast Guard expects further arrivals in the coming 48 hours. EU interior ministers will meet on 2 October in Brussels, with the Italian delegation poised to request additional Frontex aerial surveillance assets and a faster activation of the yet-to-be-ratified EU Solidarity Mechanism.
