Immigration New Zealand has reminded applicants that from 5 October 2026 its Parent Resident Visa will switch to a queue-plus-ballot model, with 90 percent of Expressions of Interest (EOIs) selected in chronological order and 10 percent via lottery. The agency’s web update notes that EOIs will no longer expire every two years; instead, holders must reconfirm interest within six months of the anniversary date. Applicants whose EOIs lapse on or before 4 October (NZDT) must submit a replacement today to retain their original queue position. India is the second-largest source of parent-category EOIs after China, accounting for roughly 18 percent of the 14,000-strong pool. Under the new rules, families that filed repeat EOIs within 90 days of expiry can keep their original submission date—good news for many Indian migrants who have waited since 2021. The annual cap remains 2,500 visas, but chronological selection means applicants could have clearer timeframes for medicals, police certificates and relocation planning. Those outside New Zealand must be ready to travel within 12 months of visa grant; failure to do so triggers lapses under the Immigration Act 2009. Indian employers in New Zealand’s ICT and healthcare sectors should factor the change into workforce-planning models: the ability to reunite parents might improve retention of skilled staff but also increase demand for family housing and schooling services.
