Trenitalia restores full service on Rome–Naples corridor after mid-morning technical failure
Rail operator Trenitalia confirmed that traffic on the Rome–Naples (via Formia) and Rome–Nettuno lines returned to normal at 13:10 on Sunday 4 October after a signalling failure near Pomezia slowed services for almost two hours. Intercity 95057 from Rome Termini to Palermo recorded the longest additional journey time at 60 minutes, while several regional trains saw delays of 40 minutes. The state-owned company’s Infomobilità portal reports that the incident was caused by a local power fault, unrelated to the national strike activity earlier in the week. Emergency crews from Rete Ferroviaria Italiana replaced damaged components and progressively lifted speed restrictions. As of 14:00 all trains are running to timetable, and the national network is flagged ‘circolazione regolare’ (normal circulation). Although the disruption was short-lived, the Rome–Naples corridor is critical for both domestic commuters and long-distance business travellers connecting to high-speed services towards Milan and Florence. Global-mobility managers should be aware that the route also handles luggage-forwarding services used by relocating employees. Delays can therefore create knock-on effects for household-goods logistics when trains miss allocated truck-loading windows in Naples port. Trenitalia reminds passengers that compensation under EU Regulation 1371/2007 applies only when arrival is delayed by more than 60 minutes. Affected travellers can apply online within 12 months of the travel date. Season-ticket holders may claim prorated renewal credits. Looking ahead, RFI has scheduled infrastructure upgrades around Novara from 06:00 to 14:00 on Sunday 11 October; travellers should check revised timetables, especially if connecting to international services via Milan.
