Brazil’s busiest domestic carrier, Azul Linhas Aéreas, unveiled in the early hours of 8 October a sizeable expansion of its network to the country’s leading nature attraction, Foz do Iguaçu. Between 5 December 2026 and 14 February 2027 the airline will operate two brand-new seasonal routes—Recife–Foz and Porto Alegre–Foz—alongside extra frequencies from Viracopos, Congonhas, Curitiba and Belo Horizonte. In total, the operation adds 148 flights and 19,300 seats to the city in the peak holiday window. The Porto Alegre link will offer 62 rotations (8,400 seats) and knit together two of Brazil’s strongest tourism economies, providing a nonstop option previously missing from corporate itineraries. The Recife service (44 rotations, 6,000 seats) leverages Azul’s third-largest hub, opening one-stop connections from 33 North-Eastern cities and several Caribbean points. According to the carrier’s senior network-planning manager, the goal is to “simplify access for leisure and MICE segments at a time of record visitor demand for the Iguaçu Falls complex.” For mobility buyers the announcement carries two implications. First, extra capacity should stabilise high-season fares on routes that routinely see last-minute price spikes. Second, the Recife link creates a more efficient pathway for multinational staff based in the North-East—cutting travel times that previously required a connection in São Paulo. Freight forwarders that specialise in perishables and high-tech components also stand to benefit from belly-hold space on Embraer E195-E2 jets deployed on the Recife route. The broader context is Azul’s strategy to deploy an additional 2,500 domestic flights this summer, equivalent to 370,000 extra seats—46.7 percent of them in the North-East. Industry analysts note that the aggressive ramp-up is enabled by the airline’s ongoing fleet-renewal programme, which is freeing up Airbus A320neos for trunk routes while allowing Embraer jets to serve thinner city pairs like Porto Alegre–Foz. Travellers should be aware that both new routes are seasonal; tickets go on sale this week and demand is expected to be strong, particularly around Christmas and New Year. Companies with project teams in the tri-border area (Brazil-Argentina-Paraguay) are advised to secure seat blocks early and review hotel allocations, as local occupancy rates regularly exceed 90 percent during the holiday period.
