Targeted police sweep arrests 42 people for illegal stay; returns exceed 7,200 in 2026
Cyprus’ Aliens and Immigration Service, backed by frontline police units, detained 42 foreign nationals without legal residence papers during coordinated raids in Nicosia and Limassol on 7 October. The operation, officials said, is part of a wider strategy to ‘restore credibility’ to the island’s migration system and make room for bona-fide labour programmes. The individuals—mostly overstaying short-term visitors from South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa—were transferred to the Menogia pre-departure centre, where fast-track removal procedures will be launched in cooperation with FRONTEX. Just two days earlier, nine people were flown home on a joint charter, bringing total returns this year to 7,239. Cypriot authorities have ramped up spot checks at construction sites, car-wash businesses and student housing after audits showed that up to 30 % of rejected asylum seekers remained on the island in irregular status. Employers found harbouring unauthorised workers now face fines of €5,000 per individual and a two-year ban from hiring through government quota schemes. For corporate mobility teams the message is unequivocal: ensure all third-country staff have valid permits and that renewals are submitted at least 30 days before expiry. Companies using sub-contractors should demand evidence of work-permit compliance or risk reputational fallout and potential debarment from government tenders. Human-rights NGOs urged authorities to guarantee access to legal counsel for the detainees and to screen vulnerable individuals for trafficking indicators. The migration ministry replied that Menogia’s revamped intake protocol—rolled out in August—includes medical and vulnerability assessments within 48 hours of arrival.
