Austria’s 9 October 2026 update for Djibouti keeps the country at Sicherheitsstufe 3 in border areas but places new emphasis on maritime security. The advisory cites continued pirate activity east of Djibouti along Somalia’s coastline and directs shipping operators to the International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Centre. Logistics firms routing Austrian-flagged cargo through Djibouti’s free-trade zone should ensure that vessel operators comply with BMP-5 best practices—among them, increased watch-keeping, citadel drills and the use of convoys when feasible. On land, the notice reiterates the long-standing high-risk classification for regions adjoining Eritrea and Somalia. The ministry also reminds travellers that photography of strategic sites, including ports and military facilities used by Austrian defence contractors under EU missions, is prohibited and has led to detentions. With Djibouti positioned as a growing logistics hub for Austrian aid shipments into Ethiopia and South Sudan, the renewed focus on maritime threats will feed into charter-party negotiations and insurance premiums over the coming weeks.
