Italy braces for a week of rail, bus and air disruptions as strike calendar fills up
Business and leisure travellers to, from and within Italy should prepare for a choppy week on the move. According to the real-time portal Strike Tracker, the Ministry of Transport’s strike bulletin and the independent aggregator ScioperiItalia, at least five separate industrial actions are scheduled between 12 and 15 October. The wave begins at 21:01 on Monday, 12 October, when infrastructure staff of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) in Sicily will stage a 24-hour walk-out, potentially forcing Trenitalia and Italo to cancel or re-route long-distance and regional trains across the island. On the same day, municipal bus drivers in Bari (AMTAB) will stop services for four hours in the morning peak, adding pressure on last-mile connections to Bari Palese airport and the city’s industrial estates. Freight will not be spared. On Tuesday, 13 October, nationwide cargo operator SBB Cargo Italia plans a 24-hour strike that could slow the movement of containers between the northern ports of Genoa and Trieste and logistics hubs in Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. Public-sector unions in Tuscany have called a regional general strike for Wednesday, 14 October, which is expected to hit local buses, trams, schools and public offices from Florence to Pisa. The week rounds off on Thursday, 15 October, with a four-hour national strike by air-traffic management and ground-handling staff timed between 13:00 and 17:00. ENAC has activated its minimum-services protocol, but travellers should still expect delays and selective flight cancellations at Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa and other major airports. Airlines have been asked to notify passengers 48 hours in advance and to offer re-routing or refunds where services are annulled. For corporate mobility managers the immediate advice is to re-check itineraries daily, allow generous buffers for airport and rail connections, and explore remote-working options where feasible. Companies running time-critical supply chains through Italy may need to pre-position inventory or re-route freight via road corridors through Austria, Slovenia or France. Hotels in hub cities such as Milan and Florence report a spike in last-minute bookings from travellers choosing to arrive a day early to avoid day-of-strike chaos.
