Italy keeps air- and sea-border checks on arrivals from Spain in place through 16 October
The European Commission’s Schengen register, updated on 11 October 2026, confirms that Italy’s temporary re-introduction of border controls at air and sea crossings from Spain will remain active until at least 16 October. The measure—first imposed on 1 August after a mass arrival of migrants in Ceuta—has been renewed twice and now overlaps with Spain’s own reciprocal checks on travellers from Italy, scheduled to run until 22 October. In practical terms, passengers on flights and ferries from Barcelona, Madrid or the Balearics must still show passports and, where required, Schengen visas upon arrival at Italian ports and airports. Airlines report average processing delays of 15–20 minutes at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa, while ferry operators in Genoa and Civitavecchia have added embarkation staff to manage manual ID verification. The extended controls complicate logistics for multinationals that shuttle technicians and executives between the two countries’ automotive, energy and fashion supply chains. Companies using carnet-exempt intra-EU road freight now face random customs inspections at Italian ports, adding uncertainty to just-in-time deliveries. Freight forwarders recommend inserting a 24-hour buffer into delivery schedules during the suspension period. Legal analysts note that the Schengen Borders Code limits such “Article 25” suspensions to an initial 30 days plus three renewals of up to 30 days each—a total of two months—unless the invoking state cites the less commonly used Article 29 procedure, which allows longer derogations. Because Italy’s current notice ends on 16 October, any further extension would likely require a fresh legal basis and new Commission scrutiny. Business-travel policies should continue to advise staff to carry hard-copy proof of accommodation and return transport to expedite secondary questioning. HR teams relocating Spanish assignees to Italy may see delays in residence-permit appointments because police resources have been diverted to front-line controls.
