‘English nationalist’ YouTubers spark security review after filming inside UK asylum accommodation
A widely-shared video posted on 14 October shows three self-styled “citizen journalists” walking unchallenged through a Home Office-contracted house in Leicestershire that is used to accommodate asylum seekers. The men – who describe themselves online as “English nationalist content-creators” – entered through an unlocked back door, searched bedrooms and the kitchen, read private correspondence and questioned confused residents while falsely claiming to be contractors. The footage, viewed more than 300,000 times before YouTube removed it for breaching anti-harassment rules, identifies the exact street and front elevation of the property. Serco, the government supplier that manages the house, has launched an internal investigation, while the Home Office said the safety of those in asylum accommodation “is of the utmost importance” and urged police to treat any criminality seriously. The incident highlights growing risks associated with the government’s shift from hotels to houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) for asylum housing. Addresses for HMOs are easier to trace through open-source documents, making them vulnerable to so-called “auditors” and far-right activists who have already targeted hotels. Sector charities say such trespasses traumatise already vulnerable residents and inflame local tensions. For corporates that lease property to outsourcing companies, the episode underscores the need for enhanced physical security, tighter key-holding protocols and rapid incident-response plans. Employers relocating international staff should monitor local community sentiment, particularly where properties are repurposed for asylum use, and advise assignees on personal safety. With the government still committed to ending the use of hotels by early 2027, experts warn that without stronger safeguards – including anonymous address listings, contractor ID standards and coordinated policing – more confrontations are likely, further politicising the UK’s asylum housing programme and creating reputational risks for suppliers and landlords alike.
