A meeting of EU leaders on 15–16 October at the European Council buildings in rue de la Loi has triggered a sizeable security operation in Brussels’ Schuman district. From 07:30 on Thursday the 15th, police sealed a perimeter that blocks general traffic—including bicycles and e-scooters—and bans all surface parking in affected streets. Deliveries are suspended, pavements must remain clear and building windows are required to stay closed while heads of state are in session. Public transport is also disrupted: key STIB bus lines 12, 21, 22, 27, 36, 60 and 79 are diverted via Maelbeek, and certain entrances to the Schuman metro-rail interchange may be closed altogether at police request. Regional operator De Lijn has re-routed several services, and the Reyers tunnel toward the city centre shut at 06:30 on 15 October. Travellers headed to EU institutions or neighbouring office buildings should allow considerable extra time and carry photo ID to clear access points. While Belgian internal borders remain open, the summit’s elevated threat posture could prompt spontaneous identity checks in Brussels-Capital Region, complicating last-mile logistics for chauffeurs, ride-share drivers and shuttle-bus operators serving corporate events. Hotels in the European quarter report near-full occupancy, and expatriate staff commuting from Flanders and Wallonia are being advised to work remotely where possible. Employers with posted workers on short-term projects near the cordon should verify that badges and work authorisations are up-to-date; contractors without advance accreditation will be refused entry and risk project delays. Airlines have not announced schedule changes at Brussels Airport, but ground-handling firms anticipate a spike in VIP movements, potentially affecting slot availability for charter flights. The summit highlights the knock-on effect high-level political events can have on daily mobility in Belgium, reinforcing the need for real-time travel management tools and contingency plans for international staff and visitors.
