Security perimeter for EU summit restricts movement in Brussels’ European Quarter
As EU leaders arrived on 15 October 2026 for a two-day European Council summit, Belgian police activated a large security zone around the Rue de la Loi and Schuman roundabout, leading to road closures, diverted bus routes and occasional ID checks at metro entrances. While the City of Brussels announced the measures weeks ago, the operational phase began at 06:00 this morning and immediately affected commuter flows: STIB-MIVB rerouted bus lines 12, 21, 56 and 60, while metro lines 1 and 5 skipped Schuman station during peak arrival windows for delegations. Employees of the European institutions and nearby corporates were instructed to carry badges and arrive earlier; delivery vehicles required special permits, and ride-hailing drop-offs were limited to designated zones on Avenue d’Auderghem. Brussels Airport advised travellers with flights before noon to allow an extra 45-minutes travel time if transiting through the European Quarter. Although the summit’s agenda focuses on energy prices and competitiveness, mobility professionals should note the practical impact on staff transfers between downtown hotels and headquarters buildings. The police perimeter will remain in force until 23:00 on Friday, 16 October, but additional disruption is possible if spontaneous demonstrations occur. Companies hosting meetings in the area have shifted to hybrid formats; relocation firms are postponing orientation tours until next week. The take-away: even political events not directly tied to immigration can significantly affect short-term corporate mobility, and contingency planning is essential.
