Poland, Czechia and Slovakia agree to expand joint patrols after Istebna summit
Senior border commissioners from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia met in the mountain town of Istebna on 14–15 October for their 31st annual trilateral conference. Hosted by Polish Border Guard Commander-in-Chief Gen. Robert Bagan, the gathering reviewed existing cooperation and mapped out new initiatives to strengthen the Schengen area’s eastern flank. The parties signed a protocol committing to intensify mixed patrols along the 1,300-kilometre combined land border, especially on secondary roads popular with people-smugglers circumventing main checkpoints. They also agreed to stage a full-scale crisis-migration exercise in spring 2027, testing rapid deployment of mobile control units and the use of drones for real-time surveillance. Another focal point was harmonising information systems ahead of the EU Entry/Exit System and ETIAS roll-outs. The three countries will pilot a shared data feed that alerts patrols in minutes when a third-country national overstays or violates a work-permit condition in any of the states. For employers moving staff among the Visegrád markets, the closer cooperation could translate into faster green-lane processing for bona-fide business travellers but also prompt sanctions if workers stray from authorised activities. Mobility teams should monitor forthcoming joint guidelines, expected by year-end, that will spell out documentary requirements for cross-border commuters. The summit underscored a common view that migration pressures on one border quickly ripple across the internal Schengen area. By pooling resources, the trio aims to contain irregular movements without re-erecting permanent checks that would hamper trade worth €45 billion annually.
