Border Guard officers from Sejny, near Poland’s northeastern frontier, apprehended a 19-year-old Ukrainian national suspected of organising irregular crossings from Lithuania into Poland. Acting on a prosecutor’s warrant, officers, supported by a tactical security unit, detained the individual in Bydgoszcz on 15 October. Investigators allege that the suspect coordinated pickup vehicles that ferried Middle Eastern and African migrants from forested areas just inside Lithuanian territory to safe houses deeper inside Poland, where onward transport to Germany was arranged. The arrest brings to 115 the number of facilitators captured by the Podlaskie Border Guard this year—a 30 % increase over the same period in 2025. A district court imposed police supervision, a PLN 6,000 (EUR 1,300) bond and a travel ban. Separately, administrative authorities issued a return order and a 10-year Schengen-wide re-entry ban. The case underscores the growing professionalisation of smuggling networks that have shifted toward Lithuania in response to Poland’s continued physical and electronic fortification of its Belarus border. For logistics firms and shuttle operators in the region, heightened spot checks and ad-hoc road closures along the S-61 Via Baltica corridor can be expected in coming weeks as authorities exploit intelligence gleaned from the arrest. Employers with drivers on tight schedules should factor potential delays into routing calculations.
