Prince Edward Island’s Office of Immigration has surprised observers by running a mid-month Expression of Interest draw on October 16—its second in as many weeks—and releasing the results on October 18. The province invited 157 candidates through its Labour & Express Entry stream and a further six under the Business Work Permit Entrepreneur category. The back-to-back draws mark the first time in 2026 that PEI has deviated from its long-standing schedule of a single monthly selection round. Provincial officials cited "exceptionally strong employer demand" in agrifood processing, clean-tech manufacturing and health services. With unemployment at 5.8 per cent—the lowest September rate on record—employers are pressing the province to accelerate arrivals before the summer tourism build-up begins again in May. Candidates nominated by PEI receive 600 additional Comprehensive Ranking System points and are virtually guaranteed an invitation to apply for permanent residence in the next federal Express Entry PNP draw. Business stream nominees sign a performance agreement and must invest at least CAD 200,000 in an approved enterprise. Relocation managers should note that PEI requires nominees to maintain residence on the island for at least 274 days a year until permanent residence is granted. Limited rental inventory in Charlottetown and Summerside means companies often subsidise short-term accommodations during house-hunting periods. PEI has now issued 1,482 invitations across eleven rounds in 2026—28 per cent more than at the same point last year. Stakeholders expect continued higher-frequency draws through year-end if labour demand stays hot.
