Canada records 5.3 million international arrivals in September as business travel rebounds
Preliminary frontier-count data from Statistics Canada show Canada welcomed 5.3 million international arrivals by air and land in September 2026, a 9.5 per cent jump on the same month last year. Overseas air arrivals led the surge, fuelled by robust trans-Atlantic corporate travel and conference traffic in Toronto and Vancouver. Same-day automobile trips from the United States also ticked up, reflecting a weaker Canadian dollar and the return of cross-border shopping excursions. The strong numbers come despite higher airfare and hotel costs and lingering capacity constraints at major airports. Greater Toronto Airports Authority data indicate that premium-cabin load factors on core North American business routes hit 78 per cent in September—five points above 2019 levels—suggesting companies are once again green-lighting face-to-face meetings. For Canadian firms the uptick signals renewed competition for meeting space, rental cars and temporary housing, especially in gateway cities. Mobility managers should lock in corporate rates early for 2027 incentive trips and be prepared for tighter visa-appointment calendars at busy Canadian missions abroad if demand keeps climbing. The figures also give policymakers cover for Canada’s strategy of maintaining open borders while fine-tuning program integrity measures such as the electronic travel authorisation (eTA) expansion and targeted visa-waiver pilots. Analysts expect October arrival data—due in mid-November—to reflect conference season peaks and the Thanksgiving long weekend, potentially pushing monthly arrivals above six million for the first time since 2019. Statistics Canada will release revised September counts later this year, but the leading indicator is considered 97 per cent accurate historically. If confirmed, 2026 is on track to close with more than 61 million arrivals, narrowing the gap to the pre-pandemic high of 65 million in 2019.
