Storm “Adam” Grounds Flights and Diverts Traffic Across Balearic Airports
Severe thunderstorms associated with the Mediterranean cut-off low dubbed DANA “Adam” wreaked havoc on Balearic air operations on Monday. Airport operator Aena confirmed 17 cancellations, 13 diversions and scores of delays at Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca by 19:00 CEST. Palma accounted for the bulk of disruptions—15 cancellations and 12 diversions—while Ibiza logged five cancellations and a diversion; Menorca saw one cancelled inter-island hop. Spain’s air-traffic control authority Enaire imposed flow-control measures over the western Mediterranean for safety, compounding delays for business travellers connecting through Madrid and Barcelona. Airlines re-routed flights to Valencia and Barcelona, triggering last-minute accommodation needs and duty-of-care obligations under EU261. Cargo and crew positioning were also affected. Logistics providers told Europa Press that perishable shipments missed onward road connections, while corporate shuttle operators struggled to reposition flight crews within maximum duty limits. The weather hit at the tail-end of the summer charter season, underscoring the need for contingency planning even outside peak winter storm periods. The Balearic Civil-Protection Service kept orange and yellow alerts active into the evening and asked residents to avoid non-essential travel. The regional education ministry pre-emptively suspended in-person classes on Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera for the day, easing road congestion but highlighting how weather-related mobility disruptions ripple beyond the aviation sector. Travel-risk managers with assignees in the archipelago should verify airline rebooking options, monitor AEMET advisories, and remind staff that extraordinary meteorological events exempt carriers from EU compensation—although duty-of-care service (meals, hotels) remains mandatory.
