Shannon Airport forecasts 50 000 passengers over bank-holiday weekend, issues early-arrival guidance
Shannon Airport in County Clare expects more than 50 000 passengers to pass through its terminals during the upcoming October bank-holiday weekend, a nine-per-cent increase on the same period last year, the airport told local broadcaster Clare FM on 20 October 2026. The surge caps a record summer in which the mid-west hub handled over one million travellers between May and August, making it Ireland’s fastest-growing major airport. Airport management attributes the growth to new routes launched by United (Chicago), Ryanair (Porto) and Aer Lingus (Madrid), along with marketing campaigns that position Shannon as a stress-free alternative to Dublin for US pre-clearance. While the spike is welcome news for the region’s tourism and life-sciences sectors, it raises operational challenges for airport police and immigration officers who must process larger volumes through limited border booths. To maintain passenger flow, Shannon is advising travellers to arrive two hours before European departures and three hours before transatlantic flights. Additional staff will be rostered in security and immigration, and the airport’s new e-gate trial—limited to Irish and EU biometric-passport holders—will run extended hours from Friday through Monday. For employers routing mobile staff through Shannon to avoid Dublin congestion, the early-arrival window should be factored into duty-of-care policies and travel-expense guidelines. Ground-transport providers in Limerick and Galway are already reporting tight rental-car inventory, suggesting that travellers should secure vehicles in advance. The weekend’s performance will be closely watched by the Department of Transport, which is weighing funding requests for a terminal-expansion project that would double immigration-hall capacity by 2028.
