Employment Permit section updates processing queue: Critical Skills files from 12 October now in review
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) has refreshed its online dashboard of employment-permit processing dates, confirming that—as of 20 October 2026—it is assessing Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) applications received on 12 October 2026 and Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) permits lodged on 14 October 2026. General Employment Permit (GEP) submissions from 16 September 2026 are currently being examined, while renewals and appeal files trail back to late-July and late-April respectively. The granular snapshot is keenly watched by multinational HR and global-mobility managers because Ireland issues more than 22,000 work permits a year, a majority tied to the tech, life-sciences and healthcare sectors. The latest data suggest DETE is holding its target of a four-to-six-week turnaround for the high-priority CSEP and ICT streams, but lower-priority renewals are approaching a three-month wait. Appeals remain the slowest pathway, with files from April only now being considered. DETE says extra case-workers hired in Q3 have helped stabilise lead-times after a summer surge in applications following March’s salary-threshold increases. A new triage model, piloted with Critical Skills files, auto-flags complete applications for immediate allocation, reducing officer “touch time”. Officials also revealed that 18 % of new submissions are still deemed incomplete, largely due to outdated job adverts or missing labour-market-needs test documentation—errors that automatically restart the queue clock. For employers, the implications are clear: securing talent for January start dates will require immediate filing, while contingency planning (including remote onboarding or short-term business-visas) remains advisable for harder-to-fill roles. Specialists recommend using DETE’s Trusted Partner scheme or batch-filing renewals during quieter periods to mitigate delays. Longer-term, the upcoming Employment Permits (Consolidation) Act—expected to commence mid-2027—will merge nine permit categories into three and introduce digital status updates via an applicant portal, a reform the business community hopes will permanently shorten processing cycles.
