State-owned airport operator daa has announced that its international arm, daa International, has been selected by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) to develop, lease and operate a 37,000-square-foot VIP passenger terminal at Washington Dulles International Airport. The contract, unveiled on 20 October 2026, includes a 30-month construction phase followed by a 20-year operating term. It will be the first dedicated VIP facility in the Washington, DC metro area and will offer private security screening, kerb-side check-in, luxury lounges and chauffeured transfers to aircraft. Irish Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien hailed the win as “a positive endorsement of the expertise, innovation and international reputation that daa has built.” The deal deepens daa’s footprint in North America, complementing recent travel-retail victories at New York-JFK Terminal 4 and reinforcing Dublin’s reputation as an exporter of aviation services. Nick Cole, CEO of daa International, said the project would generate local jobs in Virginia while drawing on know-how gained from Dublin Airport’s Platinum Services lounge and consultancy work in Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. For Irish corporates and premium travellers, the project opens new avenues for door-to-door concierge travel between Ireland and the US capital. daa has not ruled out reciprocal lounge-access agreements that could eventually benefit travellers departing Dublin or Cork. Airlines courting high-yield traffic—especially Aer Lingus, United and American Airlines on the Dublin–Washington route—stand to gain from bundled VIP packages once the terminal opens, likely in late 2028. The contract also illustrates a broader trend: airports worldwide are carving out premium micro-terminals as an ancillary-revenue play, targeting C-suite executives and ultra-high-net-worth individuals who are willing to pay €300–€800 per use for privacy and speed. daa International estimates demand for such services at major US gateways could exceed 200,000 passengers annually by 2030. Irish service exporters are watching closely; Enterprise Ireland already counts aviation services among its high-growth niches. The Washington deal may prompt further bids by Irish engineering and IT firms for sub-contracts ranging from biometric processing to lounge catering—spreading the global-mobility dividend well beyond daa itself.
