Strike-tracker data confirm that the German Train Drivers’ Union (GDL) is staging rolling industrial action at Saarbahn, the hybrid tram-train network linking Saarbrücken with France’s Sarreguemines. The current wave, active since 23 September, continued on 21 October 2026 and is scheduled to run until midnight on 31 October. Although classed as a ‘minor’ strike, the stoppage has cancelled roughly one in five peak-hour services, forcing commuters onto congested roads and cross-border bus routes. Business travellers using ICE and TGV connections at Saarbrücken Hbf are largely unaffected, but last-mile transfers from the city’s Eurobahnhof to local industrial zones face delays. The action is part of GDL’s nationwide pay campaign but is so far limited to the Saarbahn subsidiary rather than Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance network. Employers in the Saar-Lor-Lux region should alert staff to check timetables daily and consider flexible hours or remote work. Relocation managers moving assignees into the Greater Region may need to arrange temporary accommodation closer to worksites. Unions have threatened broader strikes if settlement talks fail in November— a potential headache for companies with holiday-season travel peaks.
