Foreign nationals applying for French visas had a brief shock this morning when the France-Visas portal went dark at 08:00 (GMT +2). The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs had pre-announced a four-hour maintenance window, during which no new applications could be created, appointments booked or supporting documents uploaded. The outage ended on schedule at 12:00, but dozens of applicants voiced concern on social media that tight travel deadlines might be missed. The maintenance is part of a wider overhaul of the France-Visas back-office ahead of the Entry/Exit System (EES) go-live next April. Consulates say they are integrating automated checks of biometric enrolment and security databases, which requires regular software patches. Capago, the outsourced visa centre for Algeria and several Gulf states, issued a separate bulletin warning applicants to submit time-sensitive files either before 20 October or after 13:00 today to avoid cascading appointment delays. While the downtime was limited, immigration lawyers say any interruption can derail tightly choreographed relocation timelines—especially for assignees who still need time-slots at TLScontact or VFS Global. Employers with transferees joining quarter-four projects should pad schedules by at least a week, they advise, and upload digital copies of all supporting documents as soon as a file number is generated. The ministries confirmed that no data were lost and that all partially completed files remain accessible. An FAQ published this afternoon clarifies that visa validity dates are calculated from the decision date, not the application date, so today’s outage will not shorten anyone’s authorised stay. A larger upgrade is pencilled in for late November; corporate mobility teams may wish to file holiday-season applications early.
