Dublin Airport Warns of 469,000 Travellers Over Bank-Holiday Rush
With Ireland’s October bank-holiday weekend fast approaching, Dublin Airport operator DAA has sounded the alarm on what could be the busiest four-day stretch since pre-pandemic 2019. In guidance issued 21 October 2026, the airport projects 469,000 passengers between Friday and Monday, peaking at 123,000 departures on Friday alone. The surge coincides with the school mid-term break and an influx of overseas visitors for Halloween festivals. Airport spokesperson Graeme McQueen urged travellers to arrive two hours before short-haul and three hours before long-haul flights, and reminded passengers that Dublin’s next-generation security lanes permit liquids and electronics to remain in cabin bags—rules not necessarily mirrored at return airports. With clocks switching to winter time at 01:00 on Sunday, DAA is also asking outbound flyers to double-check time-settings to avoid missed flights. Airlines have responded by adding extra sun-destination capacity to the Canary Islands, Spain and Portugal. Nonetheless, handling agents are braced for stresses at kerbside check-in and baggage belts. Corporate travel managers have been advised to schedule Monday-morning client meetings later in the day to allow for potential arrival delays. The airport’s advisory includes a nod to Ireland’s burgeoning reputation as “home of Halloween”, highlighting events such as the Bram Stoker Festival and Púca in Meath, both drawing significant inbound traffic. DAA has coordinated with Garda Síochána to bolster traffic flow on the M1 and Port Tunnel, while extra Aircoach and TFI services will run overnight. For mobility teams orchestrating last-minute relocations or short-term client visits, the message is clear: build in additional ground-time buffers and reconfirm flight status regularly throughout the weekend.
