Spain Updates Travel Advice for Finland, Highlights Emergency Passport Procedures
Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revised its travel recommendations for Finland on 22 October 2026. The update, posted on the ministry’s Helsinki embassy site, reminds Spanish nationals that if their travel document is lost or stolen in Finland they must request an emergency passport from the nearest police station. The guidance also re-emphasises standard Schengen requirements—valid ID, proof of onward travel within 90 days, and sufficient funds—as well as Finland’s obligation to conduct random identity checks despite the absence of Schengen-internal border controls. The timing of the notice reflects heightened awareness of travel-document security across northern Europe. Finland has reported several cases this autumn of forged or damaged passports being presented at ferry ports and Helsinki Airport. Although the overall risk environment in Finland remains low, Spanish authorities urge travellers to keep documents secure and to register contact details with the Consular Registration System so they can be reached quickly if large-scale disruptions—such as the recent Gulf-of-Finland drone alerts—occur. For corporate mobility managers, the advisory is a reminder to build contingency time into itineraries. If a passport is lost, replacing it can now take several hours because Finnish police require an appointment, a police report, and two compliant photos before issuing the emergency document. Travellers transiting Finland en route to meetings elsewhere in the Schengen Area could miss onward flights if they have not factored in that delay. The updated guidance also clarifies that holders of Spain’s new digital COVID-19 recovery certificate no longer need to present it at Finnish borders. However, proof of health insurance that is valid in Finland and covers at least €30 000 in medical expenses is still recommended. Companies should therefore continue to include insurance confirmation letters in business-traveller documentation packs. In practice, the advisory should not deter travel. Helsinki’s business-events calendar remains busy, and both Finnair and Iberia report strong forward bookings. Nevertheless, mobility professionals should circulate the new procedures to ensure Spanish travellers understand the steps required to obtain an emergency passport and the importance of safeguarding identity documents while in Finland.
