Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) refreshed its Smartraveller advisory for Finland today, listing the guidance as "still current at 7 October 2026." The notice keeps Finland at the lowest risk rating but warns of possible delays at internal Schengen borders and confirms that all land crossings between Finland and Russia remain closed "indefinitely." The advisory tells Australian citizens that they may be subject to random police ID checks inside Finland and recommends carrying a passport at all times, even when travelling from another Schengen country. It also points travellers to Helsinki Airport’s advice on biometric processes linked to the Entry-Exit System. For multinational companies managing APAC assignees, the update is a timely reminder that staff members planning surface travel to the Baltics or onward rail journeys into Russia will need to reroute via air or sea. Mobility managers should review duty-of-care protocols for employees transiting through Finnish territory to ensure alternative evacuation plans do not rely on land exits to Russia.
