Platform Changes and Overnight Track Work to Affect Helsinki Commuter Trains 22–23 October
Helsinki Regional Transport Authority (HSL) has announced temporary platform reallocations at both Helsinki Central Station and Pasila from the evening of 22 October through the end of service on 23 October. The engineering works will also alter stopping patterns on the A, E, L and U lines, which link the capital with key satellite cities and provide indirect rail access to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. During the 30-hour window, all west-bound commuter trains will depart from tracks 11–13 instead of the usual 3–6 at Central Station, while services toward Riihimäki will use platforms 3 and 4. At Pasila, trains to Leppävaara will shift to track 2. HSL says the changes are required to allow ballast tamping and signal-cable replacement on the busiest approach into the station complex. For business travellers, the disruption carries real-world implications. The A line is a popular connection for conference delegates staying in Espoo’s hotel cluster, and many airport-bound passengers use the ring-rail connection that shares portions of the same track. HSL will post extra staff on concourses, but ticket holders should allow at least 15 minutes of additional transfer time, especially during the Friday morning peak. Companies hosting events in the capital region have been advised to re-route courtesy shuttles or encourage participants to disembark at Ilmala or Huopalahti stations, where ride-hailing pick-up is less congested. Although replacement buses are not planned, VR-Track says real-time updates will appear in the HSL mobile app. Travellers with tight intercity connections at Helsinki Central should consider booking seats on later long-distance departures. Normal timetables are expected to resume at 04:00 on Saturday, 24 October, weather permitting. The works form part of a €25 million upgrade designed to raise commuter-train punctuality to 97 percent ahead of the busy holiday-travel season.
