Germany to send engineers for Poland’s ‘Eastern Shield’, foreshadowing tighter crossings

Berlin has confirmed it will deploy 50 Bundeswehr engineers in April 2026 to help construct Poland’s ‘Eastern Shield’—a network of anti-tank ditches, barbed wire and bunkers along the 418-km border with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad. The non-combat mission, announced on 13 December, is the first time since reunification that German troops will build permanent fortifications on Polish soil.
