UK Electronic Travel Authorisation Now Mandatory for Swiss Citizens from February 2026
The United Kingdom has confirmed that its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme will become mandatory for travellers from the European Economic Area—including Switzerland—on 25 February 2026. Swiss, French, German and Italian nationals who previously enjoyed visa-free access must now obtain an ETA online before boarding a flight, ferry or Eurostar service to the UK. The authorisation costs £16, is valid for two years or until passport expiry, and carries severe overstay penalties.(travelandtourworld.com)

The move aligns the UK with countries such as the United States (ESTA) and Canada (eTA) and precedes the EU’s own ETIAS scheme due at the end of 2026. Airlines and other carriers will be fined for transporting passengers without a valid ETA, effectively shifting border checks upstream to the point of departure.(travelandtourworld.com)

For Swiss corporates, the change adds a new administrative step for short-term business travel to London and beyond. Global-mobility teams should update travel-approval workflows, budget for the fee, and brief employees on the three-day processing window. Frequent travellers may wish to synchronise ETA renewals with passport renewals to avoid mid-assignment lapses.(travelandtourworld.com)

The UK Home Office expects the ETA to generate £269 million annually, funding enhanced border-security infrastructure. Irish citizens remain exempt under the Common Travel Area agreement. Travellers who overstretch their authorised stay risk fines, future bans and potential deportation, making compliance essential.
