La Rioja’s tiny Agoncillo airport celebrated the landing of Vueling flight VY1812 from Barcelona at 09:25 on 27 March, restoring a route that had been dormant for nearly a decade. Local officials greeted the A320’s 75 passengers – and a Riojan pilot on the flight deck – with pañuelos and regional wine, underscoring the political importance of improving the region’s accessibility. The service will operate four times a week, timed for same-day connections at Barcelona-El Prat to more than 100 cities across Europe, North Africa and the Americas. Vueling’s director of communications, Anna Viladot, said the airline views the link as “part of our commitment to reinforce domestic connectivity while leveraging Barcelona as a global hub”. Introductory fares start at €39 one way, although only hand luggage is included. From a mobility perspective, the flight slashes journey times for corporate travellers by at least four hours compared with rail-plus-road options, making day trips to tech clusters in Catalonia or onward long-haul flights viable without an overnight in Madrid. Regional exporters of wine and agri-tech equipment also gain faster access to cargo belly-hold capacity at El Prat. The regional government has underwritten the route with a three-year public-service obligation (PSO) valued at €2.1 million, aiming to stimulate tourism and curb outward migration of skilled workers. Should load factors exceed 70 % in the first year, a second daily frequency could be negotiated, potentially timed to connect with Vueling’s evening North-America bank. Human-resources teams moving staff to Logroño can now integrate seamless air-rail itineraries: a new shuttle bus aligns with the flight schedule and arrives at Logroño station in 20 minutes, linking with Renfe’s Madrid-Hendaye corridor. The airport still lacks Schengen e-gates, so non-EU assignees should allow extra time for manual passport inspection.
