At a 11 June press conference, the Federal Council’s G7 delegate, Ambassador Alain Gaschen, outlined Switzerland’s security concept for the Évian summit, confirming the re-introduction of internal border controls with France and the deployment of roughly 4,000 military personnel to support cantonal police in Geneva, Vaud and Valais. Border agents will be empowered to perform spot checks on travellers entering from France, while Frontex specialists will reinforce the FOCBS at Geneva Airport to keep external Schengen flows moving. Although the measure is temporary, it represents the first large-scale use of Switzerland’s 2024 Internal Borders Ordinance, which allows the government to reinstate checks for major events or security threats. For mobility managers, the chief impact will be potential ID inspections on normally open road crossings; staff should therefore carry valid travel documents even on routine cross-border commutes. Air operators should anticipate periods of restricted airspace and priority given to state flights. Cost-sharing has also been clarified: Bern will reimburse 80 % of cantonal security expenses, easing budget pressure on local authorities but leaving businesses to absorb indirect costs such as overtime and rerouting.
