Summer boost: Extra Intercity buses added on Nicosia–Ayia Napa route
Holiday-makers and commuting workers will find it easier – and cheaper – to reach Cyprus’s most popular resort strip this summer. In the early hours of 13 June the Ministry of Transport announced, together with operator Intercity Buses, an expanded timetable on the Nicosia–Ayia Napa/Paralimni corridor, the island’s busiest long-distance public-transport link. Morning departures from the capital have been doubled, while late-afternoon and evening return services have been added to accommodate day-trippers staying for dinner or night-life. The move responds to a 17 % jump in weekend ridership recorded in May and to persistent traffic jams on the A3 motorway. By nudging visitors onto coaches, officials hope to cut private-car volumes and slash CO₂ emissions during peak tourist months. Under the scheme, integrated ticketing with Nicosia’s urban bus network allows passengers to connect from suburban stops for a single fare of €6 one-way or €10 return.

For international visitors planning a side trip or a longer stay, securing the proper entry paperwork can be just as critical as catching the right bus. VisaHQ’s Cyprus portal (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/) streamlines visa and residence-permit applications with clear online forms, document checks, and real-time status updates—helping travellers and HR teams stay compliant and save valuable time.

For employers the news is significant in two ways. First, companies housing foreign staff in the capital but operating seasonal outlets in Protaras or Ayia Napa can use scheduled buses instead of organising private shuttles – reducing logistics costs. Second, expatriates holding temporary residence cards travel at a discounted €5 return, an incentive that may broaden weekend mobility for assignees and their families. Intercity Buses says the extra runs will operate until 15 September, with a performance review in mid-August. If passenger load factors average above 65 %, the company aims to make some of the additional frequencies permanent and to introduce real-time seat-availability data via its mobile app. The Ministry is also studying whether similar frequency boosts are justified on the Nicosia–Paphos Airport line, frequently used by business travellers connecting to European flights. Global-mobility managers should update welcome packs for incoming assignees to include the new timetable and clarify the integrated-ticketing rules. The enhanced public transport offer may also support green-travel policies for staff reimbursement and corporate sustainability reporting.
