Helsinki Airport Breaks Weekly Passenger Record as Summer Holidays Begin
Finavia, the state-owned operator of Finland’s airports, reports that the first two weeks of the school-holiday period have propelled Helsinki Airport to its busiest spell since the pandemic. Between 1 and 7 June the airport handled about 378,000 travellers, narrowly topping its previous post-Covid record. The following week (8–14 June) came a close second, underlining a strong recovery in both leisure and corporate demand. Senior Vice-President Laura Inttilä attributes the surge to the airport’s reputation for fast connections and customer experience. Average security-queue times have remained under ten minutes despite peak loads, thanks to 100 % 3-D scanners and advance-passenger-flow modelling introduced last year. Business-class travellers have particularly praised the new priority lane that shortcuts them straight from the train station into departures.

Whether you're connecting through Helsinki or starting your journey in Finland, sorting out visa formalities early can save the same precious minutes that the airport is famous for. VisaHQ’s online platform (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) lets travellers instantly check entry requirements, arrange e-visas, and schedule embassy appointments, giving leisure and corporate passengers alike one less queue to worry about during the peak season.

Finavia’s route-development chief Petri Vuori notes that capacity growth is broad-based. European carriers have restored almost all pre-war frequencies, while long-haul operators are adding fresh destinations. Finnair will open Dubai and Melbourne routes in late August, and Qatar Airways has upgraded Doha flights to the Airbus A350 to accommodate transfer traffic between Asia and North America via Helsinki. Operationally, fuel-supply worries sparked by Middle-East tensions have not materialised. Kerosene stocks at Finnish depots remain stable, and contingency agreements with Swedish suppliers stand ready should shipping lanes be disrupted. Finavia has also hired 400 seasonal staff for ground handling and border-control support to prevent the staffing bottlenecks seen elsewhere in Europe last summer. For mobility managers the message is clear: June–August 2026 will be exceptionally busy at Helsinki. Companies should book intra-Schengen flights at least two weeks ahead, remind travellers to arrive three hours before long-haul departures, and budget for elevated airfares on popular Friday and Monday morning bank-breaker flights.
