The forecast follows similar surge warnings issued for Shenzhen but is notable because HZMB had previously lagged older Gongbei in volume. Officials attribute the spike to the coincidence of public holidays in both SARs, newly relaxed coach-tour quotas and a wave of last-minute family visits now that university exams on the mainland have finished. They have pledged to open the maximum 148 inspection lanes and deploy bilingual crowd-marshals around the clock. While the headline numbers focus on Macau, the knock-on effect for Hong Kong travellers is significant: the Hong Kong port building is bracing for 3,000 extra shuttle-bus departures over three days, and bus operators warn tickets are selling out six hours earlier than usual. Freight brokers also note that just-in-time e-commerce parcels moving by bonded truck may encounter cut-off issues as customs officers are diverted to passenger counters. Mobility teams with regional roles should therefore check that travellers hold confirmed shuttle tickets before issuing flight bookings out of Hong Kong or Macau, and consider using the Shekou ferry if delays become acute.
