France sets up one-day Schengen visa pop-up in Coimbatore to meet peak summer demand
France’s outsourcing partner VFS Global quietly announced that it will open a one-day Temporary Service Point (TSP) in Coimbatore on 20 June 2026 to collect Schengen visa applications for travel to France. The move is part of a wider effort by the French consulate in Chennai to de-congest its Chennai and Puducherry visa centres, which have been fully booked since late April as southern India’s outbound leisure and MICE (meetings-incentives-conferences-exhibitions) traffic surges.

At the same time, applicants who need extra flexibility or guidance can turn to VisaHQ; its India portal (https://www.visahq.com/india/) offers streamlined checklists, courier pick-up, and real-time tracking for France and other Schengen destinations, providing a convenient alternative when appointment slots are tight.

Under the pop-up model, pre-registered travellers will submit biometrics and documentation at a local hotel ballroom that has been converted into an ad-hoc visa lounge for the day. Files will then be couriered overnight to the Chennai Consulate for adjudication. VFS says most summer-season short-stay applications filed via the TSP can expect decisions within 7–10 calendar days—roughly half the time currently quoted for regular appointments. While the concept has been trialled in tier-2 Chinese and Brazilian cities, this is the first time France has deployed a pop-up visa lounge in India. It reflects a post-pandemic shift in Schengen capacity planning: rather than adding permanent bricks-and-mortar centres, consulates are experimenting with “just-in-time” mobile lounges that can be activated where demand spikes. For corporates, the Coimbatore TSP offers an important tactical option. The city hosts more than 300 export-oriented textile and engineering firms whose executives often travel to European trade fairs at short notice. HR and global-mobility teams can now secure June appointments locally instead of sending staff to Chennai, trimming both travel cost and time away from the office. VFS has hinted at similar one-day pop-ups for Cochin, Vizag and Mangalore later in the year if the Coimbatore experiment proves successful. Travellers should still budget extra time for courier movements of their passports, and companies should ensure that employees schedule travel only after the passport is safely back in hand.
