Spanish-language outlet BeOne Radio Canada reported on June 23 that IRCC has updated the police-certificate requirements for International Experience Canada (IEC) applicants. Under the new rule—posted to the department’s website on 17 June but clarified this week—police certificates must be issued no more than six months before IRCC receives the work-permit application. Previously, certificates could be older provided the applicant had not returned to the issuing country. The clarification affects approximately 90,000 young professionals and working-holiday makers expected to apply in the 2027 IEC season. Because certificates can take several weeks to obtain in countries such as France, Australia and South Korea, the six-month validity window effectively shortens the preparation period. Candidate pools will likely fill faster as applicants race to collect documents before certificates expire. Sponsors in the Young Professionals and Co-op streams should adjust recruitment timelines accordingly and consider reimbursing police-certificate costs to avoid last-minute drop-outs. HR teams processing in-house transfers under IEC must now check issue dates carefully; an expired certificate will trigger a request for new documents and could delay entry by months. IRCC also reminded U.S. citizens that they must upload an FBI Identity History Summary rather than a state record. Given that the United States is the largest IEC partner, American applicants who send state police checks risk refusal under the tightened rules.
