Hong Kong to Activate ‘Seamless e-Channel’ at HZMB on 25 June
Hong Kong’s Immigration Department has confirmed that the city’s first ‘seamless clearance’ lanes—branded the “無感 e-道” (Seamless e-Channel)—will go live in the departure hall of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) control point on 25 June. A last-minute operational test conducted on 23 June showed the lanes reliably process travellers in about five seconds using facial-recognition cameras and AI motion tracking.

Eligible users are Hong Kong permanent residents aged 11 or above who have crossed HZMB at least ten times in the past 90 days and who pre-enrolled through the Contactless e-Channel mobile app.

The ‘walk-through’ system removes the need to stop, scan an ID card or present a QR code. Cameras capture facial biometrics while a secondary sensor verifies gait, improving fraud detection.

Immigration officers monitor the process from a control room; human counters remain available for exceptions.

According to officials, the pilot will handle about 5 percent of daily departures at HZMB initially, scaling up once data prove stable.

For business travellers, the upgrade promises faster door-to-door journey times between Hong Kong and the mainland.

Whether you need help confirming visa requirements for China, Macao, or any other onward destination after breezing through the new Seamless e-Channel, VisaHQ’s Hong Kong portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) can take care of the paperwork. The platform lets travellers and corporate travel managers check entry rules, order visas online, and arrange consular appointments, ensuring that border clearance is truly hassle-free from start to finish.

Logistics firms expect lorry drivers to clear customs more quickly, cutting wait-time costs at the bridge freight yard.

Corporates that shuttle staff between regional offices in the Greater Bay Area are advising employees to download the app ahead of summer peak travel.

Immigration specialists see the pilot as part of a broader technology push.

Hong Kong already operates standard e-Channels at all land crossings; the new version eliminates the physical stop, mirroring systems deployed in Singapore’s Changi Airport and Dubai.

If successful, officials plan to replicate Seamless e-Channels at the Airport, Shenzhen Bay and West Kowloon high-speed-rail terminus by 2027.

Practical tip: expatriate assignees and frequent business visitors who hold Hong Kong identity cards can enrol remotely; however, they must still carry the physical card as backup until statutory changes remove that requirement next year.
