Irish Immigration Service Warns of Extended Processing Times for Online Renewal Applications
In a notice posted on 30 June 2026, Ireland’s Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) acknowledged that online renewals of Irish Residence Permit (IRP) cards are taking longer than normal and urged employers and applicants to plan accordingly. The department cites an unprecedented volume of files following May’s changes to employment-permit salary thresholds and June’s commencement of the International Protection Act 2026. ISD says additional staff have been seconded from other divisions and weekend overtime authorised, yet the queue for standard renewals in Dublin now stands at roughly nine weeks—up from the usual three-to-four. Priority is being given to humanitarian cases and to applicants whose employment permits will lapse within 30 days.

If applicants or HR teams need extra, hands-on assistance navigating these temporary backlogs, VisaHQ offers a streamlined concierge service that can pre-check documentation, monitor ISD status updates and coordinate secure courier return of passports once the new card is issued. Full details of their corporate and individual support options can be found at https://www.visahq.com/ireland/

The online portal remains the fastest route; in-person bookings at Burgh Quay or regional Garda stations will not be accepted unless specifically instructed. For companies, the delay creates knock-on risks: foreign employees awaiting a renewed IRP card may be unable to leave and re-enter the State without a pre-clearance letter, and banks or PPS-number issuing offices sometimes refuse expired cards even though statutory permission remains in force under section 4(7) of the Immigration Act 2004. ISD recommends that HR departments download the portal’s confirmation receipt and attach it to payroll files and right-to-work records in case of a Workplace Relations Commission audit. The department also hints that a partial automation upgrade—linking the renewal system to the Department of Enterprise’s employment-permit database—will go live in Q4 2026, which should shorten processing times permanently. Until then, mobility managers are advised to initiate renewals at least 12 weeks before expiry and to brief travelling staff on re-entry documentation.
