‘Operación Verano’ Begins: Spain Plans for 104 Million Road Trips and Mass Crossings to Africa and Portugal
Spain’s Directorate-General of Traffic (DGT) launched its annual summer mobility plan—‘Operación Verano’—at 15:00 on Friday, 3 July. Officials expect 104 million long-distance road journeys between now and 31 August, including 3.5 million travellers and 800,000 vehicles transiting the Strait of Gibraltar to North Africa under Operación Paso del Estrecho. The DGT has rolled out phased traffic-management operations aligned with traditional getaway weekends (end-of-July, mid-August and end-of-August) and will deploy 31,500 personnel, 780 fixed radars, 545 mobile speed-checks and 39 drones. A separate ‘Paso de Portugal’ plan will manage an estimated 270,000 vehicles crossing the land border.

For travelers finalizing documents before hitting Spain’s highways—whether heading onward to Portugal, North Africa or just touring the peninsula—VisaHQ can streamline any last-minute visa or residency paperwork. Their Spain hub offers quick online processing, real-time status updates and expert guidance so drivers can focus on the road, not the red tape.

New this year is a contingency for the 12 August solar eclipse, expected to draw tens of thousands of motorists to northern Spain for prime viewing. Authorities will activate pop-up traffic controls and roadside assistance points along the A-8 and A-1 corridors. Companies moving assignees or goods by road should account for potential congestion, mandatory rest-break enforcement and tighter alcohol-and-drug checks. Logistics firms serving Maghreb markets may need to adjust sailing slots at Algeciras and Tarifa; ferry operators have scheduled 10,500 rotations this summer with flexible departure times to de-clog port access roads.
