Italy helps spearhead EU-wide Entry/Exit System now active at 1,700 borders
A long-planned digital overhaul of Schengen frontiers became reality this weekend as the EU confirmed full activation of the biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) across more than 1,700 air, sea, rail and land checkpoints. A feature article published on 4 July by NomadLawyer highlights the pivotal role of Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Hungary in stress-testing the network at mega-hubs such as Rome-Fiumicino and Milan-Malpensa. EES replaces manual passport stamps for third-country nationals with a single, shared database recording facial images, fingerprints and travel history. First-time enrolment can extend border processing by up to 20 minutes, but repeat entries are expected to be faster than the old manual check. Italian border police have installed 150 additional e-gates and deployed ‘mobile enrolment teams’ to cruise-ship piers in Civitavecchia and Venice.

Meanwhile, travellers who would rather not wrestle with the new paperwork can turn to VisaHQ; its dedicated Italy page (https://www.visahq.com/italy/) provides step-by-step EES and ETIAS guidance, calculates Schengen day counts, and even arranges rush visa processing for onward trips—making compliance as painless as possible.

For global-mobility programmes the implications are significant: overstay calculations are now automatic and pan-European, so employees who exceed the 90/180-day Schengen limit in any member state risk immediate refusal at their next entry point. Companies must therefore maintain precise day-count records, including weekend city breaks tagged onto business trips. Airports Council International Europe warns that the “learning curve” will coincide with record passenger volumes. Amsterdam Schiphol and Rome-Fiumicino have already reported kiosk glitches under heavy load. Travellers are advised to allow additional time and ensure passports are machine-readable and undamaged. In the medium term, the unified data platform will enable pre-clearance of Registered Traveller Programmes and seamless integration with ETIAS once that system goes live. Italy’s Interior Ministry says it will pilot a combined EES/ETIAS fast-track for high-frequency business visitors in early 2027.
