Vuvale Union extends stay period but stops short of visa-free travel for Fijians
In a joint press conference broadcast by ABC’s federal-politics live blog, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the new Vuvale Union treaty will not grant visa-free entry to Fijian nationals. Instead, the agreement lengthens permissible stay on existing visitor and temporary-work visas — a compromise aimed at encouraging mobility while preserving Australia’s border-integrity settings. Fijian media had speculated that Suva would secure 90-day visa-free access similar to the trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement, but Home Affairs advisers argued that wholesale liberalisation would undermine recently tightened visitor-screening metrics.

For travellers and employers needing clarity amid these adjustments, VisaHQ can serve as a one-stop resource. Its Australia portal collates the latest policy updates and offers end-to-end assistance with visitor, work and family visa applications, reducing paperwork mistakes and helping applicants secure appointments sooner.

The treaty does, however, commit both countries to pilot a multi-year “Pacific Mobility Pass” that would bundle a two-year multiple-entry visitor visa with work-rights of up to 90 days a year, subject to health and character checks. The stay-period extension will particularly benefit families of PALM and Skills Hub participants, many of whom currently rely on costly repeat applications for Subclass 600 visas. Canberra will also open an online scheduling platform to cut processing times for Fijian applicants to under ten days by December. Businesses employing Fijian talent should audit contract lengths: staff on extended visitor visas must still depart Australia when cumulative days exceed the new cap or transition to a work visa. Further details will be released before the pilot launches in Q2 2027.
