India launches fully digital e-OCI Card for overseas citizens
The Government of India has taken another decisive step in streamlining mobility for its 5-million-plus Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). From 8 July 2026, all new OCI registrations are being issued exclusively as a downloadable ‘e-OCI Card’, ending the decades-old practice of printing and dispatching a multi-page booklet. According to the Bureau of Immigration (BoI), applicants will receive a secure link once their case is approved and can store the QR-coded card on a smartphone for presentation at immigration counters or airline check-in desks. Officials say the digital shift is part of a broader programme to make every major immigration interaction paper-less.

The e-OCI platform now allows applicants to upload biometrics, pay fees and track status online; physical visits are required only for spouse-based applications in which a mandatory interview remains. BoI posts on social media emphasised that holders “no longer need to carry the physical booklet” and that the QR code can be verified in real time at 140 international checkpoints across India. For employers the change eliminates a common compliance headache. Multinationals that post OCI staff to India previously had to ensure passports were always accompanied by the booklet, creating document-management risks and extra courier costs. Airlines, too, stand to benefit: the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has cleared the e-OCI QR code for automated document checks, paving the way for smoother self-service bag-drop and boarding processes. Legal advisers note that the digital card also ends confusion over “age-linked” re-issuance windows. While existing booklet holders can keep using them, most are expected to switch to e-OCI over the next year because updates such as a new passport or a change of address can be made online without visiting an Indian mission. In practical terms, corporate mobility managers should update their travel policies immediately: – brief OCI employees that the booklet is optional but still valid; – instruct travel desks to accept a downloaded e-OCI PDF/Apple Wallet file; – ensure airline profiles reflect the new document type (‘OCI-E’) to avoid check-in errors. With many Indian airports forecasting double-digit international traffic growth this winter, the e-OCI roll-out is expected to shave critical minutes off every immigration transaction.
