Super Typhoon Bavi grounds scores of flights at Hong Kong International Airport
Hong Kong’s summer travel rush was abruptly halted on 9–10 July when Super Typhoon Bavi swept past Taiwan and tracked toward the East China coast. By 4:00 p.m. on 9 July, the Hong Kong Observatory had already raised the Stand-by Signal 1 and warned that higher signals could follow within 24 hours. Airlines reacted quickly. A South China Morning Post tally showed more than 40 flights cancelled and at least 10 delayed between Friday and Saturday, affecting services operated by Cathay Pacific, HK Express, Hong Kong Airlines, Greater Bay Airlines and EVA Air. The worst-hit routes were the heavily travelled business corridors to Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, as well as leisure destinations Okinawa and Ishigaki.

In situations like these, travellers often find themselves changing destinations, adding transit stops or extending stays at short notice. VisaHQ’s Hong Kong team can fast-track visas, passports and other travel documents, supplying real-time entry-requirement updates so that disrupted passengers can reroute confidently and stay compliant while the storm passes.

HK Express issued a rare system-wide “Important Travel Notice”, confirming it had scrapped flights UO842/843/844/845 on 10 July and warned that further suspensions on Taiwanese services were likely if wind speeds intensified. The carrier encouraged passengers booked between 9–11 July to use the airline’s self-service tools for free rebooking or refunds. Airport Authority Hong Kong activated its Emergency Centre overnight to coordinate runway allocation, aircraft parking and public-transport contingency plans. Although the Airport Express line remained in normal service, officials warned of “significantly longer” taxi queues once the No. 8 Gale Signal is hoisted. Logistics providers shifted high-value cargo to earlier flights or deferred shipments to 12 July to avoid possible warehouse bottlenecks. For corporate mobility managers, the disruption underscores the importance of multi-city routing flexibility in Asia-Pacific itineraries. Travellers connecting through Hong Kong to mainland China were advised to consider rerouting via Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Singapore until the typhoon clears. Global travel-risk firms recommended activating duty-of-care check-ins for staff in Hong Kong, Taiwan and eastern China, as Bavi is forecast to make landfall near Fujian–Zhejiang on 11 July. With Hong Kong’s peak holiday season under way, further weather-related volatility remains likely in July and August.
