The boat was intercepted five nautical miles south of the island after a distress call and heavy listing to starboard. Although overall arrivals to the Canary Islands have fallen 67 % this year, border police say traffickers are taking greater risks by overloading vessels to maintain profits, redirecting some flows toward the Balearic Islands and Andalusian coast. El Hierro, the smallest of the Canaries, has become a target because its reception facilities are less saturated than Gran Canaria. For relocation managers the incident underscores that emergency transfers from island reception centres to mainland shelters can affect processing timelines for humanitarian work permits and family-reunification cases. NGOs are urging the Interior Ministry to accelerate transfers to the peninsula, warning that heat-wave conditions amplify medical risks during sea crossings.
