Mega-tech expos pull 25,000 overseas delegates to Hong Kong, signalling robust MICE rebound
Hong Kong’s meetings-incentives-conventions-and-exhibitions (MICE) sector received a major vote of confidence this week as three of the world’s largest technology conferences — LEAP East, Fintech Nexus Asia and the Global AI Summit — opened concurrently at the Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). According to organiser figures released on 13 July, the trio of events drew more than 25,000 participants, 55 per cent of whom travelled from outside Hong Kong. The bumper turnout is the strongest showing since border restrictions were lifted in early 2025 and reflects pent-up demand for face-to-face deal-making in Asia’s finance and innovation hub. Hotels in Wan Chai and Central reported average daily room rates 30–40 per cent higher than the same week last year, while the Airport Express handled an extra 18,000 rides over the weekend, according to preliminary data from the MTR Corporation. Business groups say the events underline the city’s return to the international circuit. “High-yield delegates typically spend 20 per cent more per day than leisure tourists and are more likely to extend their trips,” noted Stuart Bailey, chairman of the Hong Kong Exhibition & Convention Industry Association. The Tourism Board is offering spending vouchers worth up to HK$1,000 per delegate for groups that stay three nights or longer, part of a HK$600 million stimulus fund announced in this year’s budget. Corporate mobility managers should expect tighter hotel availability and higher airfares through October, when another 100 large-scale trade shows are slated. Cathay Pacific has already added 34 charter and additional scheduled flights for the period, citing demand from the pharmaceutical and cleantech sectors. Travel buyers are advised to lock in inventory early and consider Kowloon properties connected by the expanded Shatin-Central rail line to control costs.

International delegates who still need to secure visas can streamline the paperwork through VisaHQ’s Hong Kong portal, which consolidates application requirements for more than 200 nationalities and offers group-management tools ideal for conference organisers. With expert support a few clicks away, exhibitors and attendees alike can focus on networking rather than navigating consulate queues.

Longer term, analysts say Hong Kong’s aggressive bidding for global conferences complements Beijing’s push to deepen Greater Bay Area integration. The city’s new seamless e-Channel pilot at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, due Q2 2026, should further streamline delegate movement across the region, reinforcing Hong Kong’s status as a launch-pad for companies eyeing mainland markets.
