Report Confirms Cyprus Has Met All Technical Schengen Criteria—Political Decision Pending
Turkish-Cypriot daily *Kıbrıs Postası* reported on 14 July that the European Commission’s latest evaluation has certified South Cyprus as fully compliant with Schengen security, data-sharing and visa-processing standards. Head of the Foreign Ministry’s Schengen Directorate Philippa Karsera Christodoulides called the development “an extremely important juncture” and urged intensified diplomacy to turn the technical verdict into a unanimous Council vote. The Commission’s experts highlighted 120 remedial actions completed since 2021, including the deployment of Advanced Passenger Information (API) collection at Larnaca and Paphos airports and the installation of automated fingerprint identification systems at ports. The report singles out Cyprus’ decision to integrate its e-visa platform with the EU’s Visa Information System (VIS) ahead of schedule, reducing application times for third-country nationals. Only two open questions remain: how Schengen rules will apply along the UN-monitored Green Line separating the island’s two communities, and whether additional air-passenger screening capacity is needed during the summer rush. Brussels is expected to release a joint roadmap with the UN before the next Justice and Home Affairs Council. The confirmation is already affecting company mobility planning. Big Four advisory firms told *Kıbrıs Postası* that boardrooms are factoring a ‘Schengen premium’ into relocation packages, anticipating easier short-term travel for staff based in Cyprus. Real-estate consultancies say demand for long-stay rentals from tech start-ups has ticked up 8 % quarter-on-quarter on expectations of smoother connectivity. If the Council votes yes in autumn, Cyprus would begin applying Schengen visa codes by April 2027. Travel agents are advising non-EU clients to monitor cut-over dates closely to avoid border confusion during the transition.
