German Embassy Jakarta Issues Detailed Guide on Re-Entry Visas for Lost or Expired Residence Permits
Expatriates and business travellers who reside in Germany but are temporarily outside the country received welcome clarity on 15 July 2026. The German Embassy in Jakarta published a 12-page “Visum zur Wiedereinreise” checklist explaining how holders of German residence permits can return if their physical card is lost, stolen, forgotten or expired while abroad. Key points: • Anyone who has misplaced their electronic Aufenthaltstitel must apply for a single-entry national visa before boarding a flight to Germany. The embassy cannot issue emergency travel documents on the spot without prior approval from the relevant Ausländerbehörde. • Processing can take up to 12 weeks; applicants can shorten the wait by providing an original “Vorabzustimmung” (pre-approval letter) from their local immigration office in Germany. • If the residence card is merely in an old but still-possessed passport, travellers may re-enter without a visa, provided personal data are unchanged and the old passport is presented at border control. • Fees, document translations and insurance requirements are spelled out in detail, reducing the risk of rejection due to incomplete files. The guidance is especially pertinent for the sizable community of Indonesian professionals on Blue Cards or ICT permits with German employers. It also offers a template for other German missions, many of which are facing similar caseload spikes as the summer travel peak coincides with renewed global mobility after the pandemic. HR teams should update their travel-risk protocols accordingly: employees on assignment should keep high-resolution copies of both passport and residence permit, and maintain contact details for their German immigration office to request a rapid pre-approval if needed. Airlines are likely to enforce the rules strictly after several high-profile cases of carriers being penalised for transporting improperly documented passengers into Germany.
